Common questions

Is a freestanding ER a real emergency room?

Yes. In Texas, a licensed freestanding ER is open 24 hours and staffed by emergency physicians, and it can treat emergencies. It is not attached to a hospital, so if you need to stay overnight or need surgery, you are transferred.

Does a freestanding ER cost more than urgent care?

Usually, yes. Freestanding ERs bill as emergency rooms. For a sprain, a cold or a simple cut, urgent care or your own doctor usually costs far less.

How do I know if a freestanding ER takes my insurance?

Texas law requires freestanding ERs to disclose whether they are in your plan's network. Call ahead if you are stable, and ask. In a true emergency, federal surprise billing protections apply.

Is this list complete?

It lists every facility on the State of Texas freestanding ER license list within about 30 miles of central Austin. Some freestanding ERs are run by a hospital and licensed as part of that hospital, so they are not on the state list. Call to confirm before you go.
